SCIE Athens
What is SCIE Athens?
Athens is a system providing FREE access through a single login to a range of subscription-based electronic information resources, online databases, electronic journals and eBooks. Athens is widely used across higher education institutions and the NHS and is now available to government-funded bodies in England providing social care.
In developing the SCIE Athens service SCIE has purchased 18 social care electronic journals and offers free rental access to a range of social work eBooks.
On registering, Athens users will be sent a username and password with which to access the journals and other resources listed below.

NHS health and social care information resources
Access a range of evidenced-based information through the NHS Evidence in Health and Social Care portal.
The A-Z of Topics is free to browse but a SCIE Athens account gives access to a wide range of additional journals and databases including AMED, BNI, CINAHL, Embase, Health Business Elite, HMIC, Medline and PsycInfo.
The databases commonly used to find social care information are:
- British Nursing Index (BNI), is a database covering all aspects of nursing, midwifery and community health from 1985 to the present. It indexes articles from the most popular English language nursing journals published primarily in the UK, and is updated monthly.
- CINAHL, database of nursing and allied health journals with almost 600 titles in full text dating back to 1981.
- PsycINFO, which provides extensive international coverage of the literature on psychiatry psychology and social sciences
